Stop living with pain!  Reconnect to your body!
Improve your overall ease, grace, coordination, and mobility!

What is Somatic Movement Therapy?

Movement Therapy can be useful for a variety of reasons.  Whether you are someone who is suffering from chronic pain, recovering from an injury, or simply want to feel more alive and connected to your body Somatic Movement Therapy can help you!

This work draws upon the theories of Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Neurological Developmental Patterns, and other Somatic Influences (such as Pilates, Alexander Technique, and Body Mind Centering).  Each session is individually tailored to meet your specific needs/goals and involves both hands-on facilitation and guided movement experiences.  The goal is for each client to leave with a better understanding of their body and develop a self awareness of their personal movement patterns to foster greater physical and cognitive performance.

Somatic Movement Therapy may be ideal for you if you are:
  • Suffering from arthritis or muscular imbalances
  • Dealing with chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain
  • Struggle with balance and stability
  • Working with developmental issues
  • Suffering from sciatica, scoliosis, or sacro-iliac pain
  • Recovering from an accident or injury
  • Looking to improve your technical virtuosity, coordination, and grace

How does it work?

Pain from injuries, aging, and even daily living are becoming increasingly accepted as part of life.  Even the subtlest injuries trigger muscular reflexes that rob you of control of your own muscles, causing pain and stiffness.  If you suffer from chronic or traumatic pain you may have resigned yourself to your condition, but it doesn’t have to be that way!

Basic body connections, which are established early on in life through a developmental progression, are the building blocks for all complex movement.  Because of habits, injuries, or other “life events;” these patterns often become overridden with compensatory habits and tension patterns which limit motion and create misalignment and dis-ease in the body.  These patterns result in muscle fatigue and stiffness which, if left alone, can become permanent resulting in inflammation, chronic fatigue, and joint degeneration.

Somatic Movement Therapy helps you become aware of your own tension patterns (the first step in easing them), and provides basic building blocks for your neuromuscular system to reconnect the body into a more efficient and expressive whole.  We are literally re-educating your own awareness which allows you to relax those over-worked muscles and find more mobility and support.
